I'm Officially in Training

I'm sure by now you have read the first post (a.k.a. Amanda's side of the story), now it's time for my side! :)

I remember the phone call about a month ago. It went like Amanda said it did. She did not, however, have the privilege of seeing my face go pale in person. Honestly, I had to sit down! I believe my answer was, "Are you crazy?? There is NO way I could ever run 13 miles!" Being the awesome, supportive friend that she is she quickly gave me reassurance and encouragement. I told her I would think about it, but in my heart I already felt defeated. The negative self-talk got BUSY!! I got off the phone and told my husband about my conversation with Amanda. He was instantly encouraging! I recall his face lighting up as he said, "Do it! You can totally do it!"

After a month of excuses and rationalization as to why I could not run the half marathon in December, I officially began training this morning. Today was the first day I was able to run 1 mile without walking or stopping. It is a baby step, but I'm definitely headed in the right direction.

I don't know yet if I am a runner or a person that runs...time will tell. But I am very excited about this new adventure with my dear friend. I can't wait to line up next to her on December 14th. She may beat me...she may be leaner than me...she may have all the top notch equipment...and I don't care one iota! It's not about competition. It's about running and finishing the race. The point is to push ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. As I wrote that last sentence, I realize that it also describes my friendship with Amanda. As least once a week we will say, "Can you believe we hated each other's guts at 14 years old??" God has done some awesome stuff in our lives as women and as friends! This is one adventure I am honored to run along side her.

Kelly, congratulations on your first step!As trite as it sounds, I think that's the hardest step to take.Building on that from here on will be easier! ;)

Just to offer reassurance, I have run for years, except when pregnant, lol. I have never had all the "stuff" most people run with. Several ladies that I do my long run with have all the little devices that beep at them, all the hydration and gel stuff. I use none of it, unless I am running longer than 7 miles, then I take water. I think we can even make running too complicated. I just go out and run and listen for the Lord's voice.

I pray it is a very enjoyable season for you as you train. I am happy about the blog you two have put together.

Blessings!
