Newbie Stuff

I'm a "newbie" runner, so with that comes "newbie" questions. For all you seasoned runners out there, feel free to offer advice and suggestions.

What are some items that you can't live/run without?

What are some "extra" items that you love to have but aren't necessities?

What is the best thing to wear when you train?

Have you found the "perfect" pair of shoes?

How do I know what training schedule to follow?

Yup, I think that is a pretty good start... Let me hear from you!

Can I comment? :)

Okay, I must have my iPod when running! Music motivates me!

Love my GARMIN watch because it charts so many things for me but it is not a must have. I just love it!

Oh my gosh! SHOES are everything! I like Asics.

I could not live without my Nike dry-fit running shorts. They are amazing! Shorts with built-in underwear are a MUST HAVE. Well, I think so! :)

Here is my training plan. I have not followed it exactly but I need to starting NOW. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/inter.htm

I am so proud of you my friend!

i'm the same way - i must have my ipod w/songs that get me moving! i also like to run in a hat - keeps my hair from driving me crazy and sweat from dripping down. i have nike dri fit running hats.
some kind of watch is a must!

i just got a garmin this year and love it, but you can live without it. also, a fuel belt (carries water) is nice to have on long runs, but you can live w/out it.

shoes - love saucony! you just have to find what works for you.

shorts - i agree w/amanda.

i also use hal higdon training plans. he has different ones for beginner and more advanced.

Kelly, listen to EVERYTHING Wendy tells you. She is a marathon runner. She has taught me EVERYTHING I know. :)

Hey Kelly, I dont run but I was doing the Treadmill for a while and the Ipod idea is definitely a good one. The music helps keep you motivated and it also helps pass the time.

Also, I have Nike Shox that I wear and LOVE! They are a little on the pricy side but if you can find a pair on sale, snag them. They are really comfy and have a lot of support.

Goodluck with running!

I agree with Wendy on the shoes, best pair I have ever owned and no injuries, pain, soreness at all!

I am not good about a training plan.My running is based on how much time I have, (3 kids,7 and under and home school.)I run 4-5 days a week about 3.5 miles and on Sat, I run between 6-10 miles. I know the plans are so much better about preparing you though.

I love reading all the comments! Thanks for starting this blog...hope it's ok that I'm commenting. ;)

I don't know if I am a 'seasoned runner', but for what it's worth...synthetic tops (like a t-shirt or tank top that's made of a breathable material) are so nice to have in this Texas heat. I have found most of mine in thrift shops--a lot look like they've hardly been used. As for running shoes--I love New Balance, but it really depends on your feet and the way you run. A lot of times a knowledgeble salesperson can help you figure out what is a good fit.

Hi Kelly,
I definetly would not call myself a seasoned runner! But I have been running for alot of years! I have never done a half or a whole marathon(Don't have the guts, I guess! ;),but I just wanted to encourage you!
I found a great website that will help you figure out what kind of runner you are so that you can pick the proper shoe for you. I use Brooks because I have really flat feet and I "over-pronate"! I know, who'd a thunk!!! Anyway the website is runningunlimited dot com and then you can click on the "running shoes explained" icon on the left if you scroll down on that page there is a whole list of things that they explain about shoes and types of runners!!! SHOES are the very most important MUST have without them you can get seriously injured.
Also, I have to have good running shorts. I prefer the spandex type that runningunlimited sells. I can't stand my shorts bunching up between my legs when I run! ;) Past that everything else is preference! And since we are on a TIGHT budget as well--I don't own anything else. I just really use that time to talk with my Jesus and decompress... God bless you in your endeavor! You will do GREAT!
Sincerely,
Sarah T
